Brico Depôt Iberia has 31 shops in Spain and Portugal, offering DIY and construction products. Brico Depôt Iberia is part of the Kingfisher Group, the European leader in the home improvement sector.
Brico Depôt wanted to run an educational project aimed at schoolchildren between the ages of 10 and 12, in their capacity as consumers, thereby helping to develop a sense of social and environmental responsibility, both individually and collectively, and generating ideas and actions to reduce the impact of the decisions we take every day as consumers. The idea was to develop skills that will put us on the road towards a model of responsible and sustainable consumption.
An educational programme called ‘Sustainable schools, sustainable homes’ has been run every year since 2015. The programme is based on a series of workshops aimed at year 5 and 6 primary schoolchildren. The workshops touch on such topics as the responsible consumption of energy, water or products that come from the forest, and help to make the children aware of the impact each consumer has when it comes to deciding what to buy. They also raise their awareness of how important it is to preserve our natural resources and which products can help us to achieve this in our homes.
More than 300 children from around 50 schools throughout Spain have taken part in the project. The project was extended to Portugal in the 2017/2018 academic year.
